Reserve info on your smartphone
Thursday 4th August
Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust embraces new technology with plans to roll out a series of new reserve signs.
We like to keep up with the latest trends, and also are always looking for new and easier ways to tell people about our nature reserves. Whilst traditional reserve information panels are still an extremely important part of how we communicate with visitors, we have now begun a new phase in nature reserve interpretation, with new interactive signs for use with smartphones.
New statistics announed today state that 1 in every 3 adults uses a smartphone - a mobile phone with extra features, including internet access; we would like to reach out to this audience.
The new range of signs will be in addition to any existing information panels, and will help visitors find out more about the nature reserve they are visiting, whilst they are actually on site. Each sign will feature a 'QR' code - a bit like a barcode for the digital age! Smartphone users simply use a free QR Reader App to decode this mobile barcode, and they will then be taken straight to the webpage about the reserve on our website.
For smartphone users, it really is as simple as downloading the free App if they don't already have it, then holding the phone up to scan the barcode, for instant access to the webpage.
We hope that this new technology will enhance visitors' experiences on ouR nature reserves, as they are able to access information about their surroundings whilst exploring each site.
The first of the new range of signs was unveiled at our Faith Marriott Nature Reserve Open Day on Sunday 14th August 2011.
