Seed money - Walter Harrisons donate over £10,000 to Wildlife Trust
One of the UK’s leading suppliers of wild bird foods and accessories, Walter Harrisons, are helping to enthuse the next generation of naturalists following a generous donation to the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.
The donation of £10,672 results from sales of Walter Harrison’s Garden Friends range of wild bird foods and accessories across the UK. Every purchase made of Walter Harrison’s bird food and accessories goes to supporting the Wildlife Trust.
The range is stocked by the Wildlife Trust at its popular Attenborough Nature Centre and Walter Harrison’s makes a minimum donation of £10,000 every year to support the work of the Trust. This year, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust will use the funding to help subsidise school visits to Attenborough Nature Reserve – supporting the charity’s work with children from schools across the county.
Speaking about the donation, Wildlife Trust Communications Manager Erin McDaid said “Attenborough Nature Centre is the focus for a major part of our education programme but we have to subsidise almost every visit because schools cannot cover the true cost. Sometimes we even have to subsidise transport costs to get the children to the reserve and as a charity this wouldn’t be possible without the support of our members and generous corporate supporters such as Walter Harrison’s”.
The level of funding provided could help support up to 30 schools to visit the centre or provide materials for over 200 education sessions. As well as supporting educational visits, a proportion of the donation will also help pay for regular updates to an innovative mobile phone based audio tour of the nature reserve, detailing forthcoming events and seasonal bird sightings.
Speaking on behalf of Walter Harrison’s, Managing Director Steve Brown said “We have been supporting the work of the Nottingham Wildlife Trust and Attenborough for a number of years and are delighted to be able to make this donation which is going to be put to good use helping youngsters to learn about and enjoy wildlife”.
As well as providing an annual cash donation Walter Harrison’s regularly supports events at Attenborough Nature Centre. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust also use Harrison’s bird foods in its feeding stations across the Nature Reserve.
