December fun thanks to The National Lottery!

Monday 11th December

December fun thanks to The National Lottery!

From Monday 11th to Saturday 16th December 2017, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust will be offering free ‘behind the scenes’ tours of the Sand Martin Nesting Bank at Attenborough Nature Reserve to National Lottery players.

Attenborough Nature Reserve is providing the tours to National Lottery players during the week as one of 350 participating National Lottery funded visitor attractions across the UK in saying ‘thanks’ to people who have raised money for good causes by buying a lottery ticket.

Attenborough Nature Reserve received £379,000from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2012 and the money paid for an extensive community outreach and programme designed to encourage a wider diversity of visitors to use the reserve and funded the construction of a unique sand martin nesting bank and viewing hide behind the Centre.

Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “December is a wonderful time to experience the UK’s rich, diverse and exciting heritage, which has been transformed by more than £7bn National Lottery funding since 1994.  This is a small gesture of thanks and a way of giving something back to the people who buy tickets.”

The idea is simple: any visitor who presents a National Lottery ticket or scratchcard between the 11th and 16th gets an opportunity to enjoy a behind the scenes tour of the hide.

Tim Sexton of Attenborough Nature Centre said: “Thanks to National Lottery players we’ve been able to do create our wonderful sand martin hide which has already helped raise over 800 sand martin chicks since it was completed in 2014. The design of the hide means that volunteers can record every stage of the sand martin’s development and visitors can get wonderful views of these amazing birds.”

The tours will take Lottery Players behind the scenes of the Sand Martin Nesting Bank where they can see the nesting chambers and hear from the volunteers that have been carrying out the ringing and recording. The tours will start at 12pm every day and will last approximately 20 minutes.

Tim added: “The data from the nesting banks provides us with an insight into the sand martin’s life history and their migration patterns. So successful is the nesting bank at Attenborough, that it now contributes to around 10% of all the sand martins ringed in the UK and 10% of sand martin nest record cards completed, and therefore makes a significant contribution to the species’ conservation as well as providing a unique experience for visitors”
