Woodland Wild Play Toddlers

Wednesday 13th December

Woodland Wild Play Toddlers

The woods at Idle Valley are alive with toddlers, exploring and learning about the outdoors and wildlife in a safe outdoor setting.

The sessions, run by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust with support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, have been set up as a pilot programme, encouraging parents and carers to join in with the woodland activities with their children. Amongst many activities they can sit around the campfire toasting marshmallows, learn to climb trees safely and manage risk as well as have a go at using simple hand tools to make natural pendants to wear.

The toddler ‘Wild Play’ sessions have been delivered weekly throughout November at the Idle Valley nature reserve to engage children between 2 and 4 years old in woodland activities. The aim has been to provide free play activities for the children and carers to dip into. Although a pilot program at the Idle Valley, the initiative has taken its lead from similar hugely popular sessions at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trusts Attenborough Nature Reserve in the south of the county.

Kevin Widdowson, session leader and People and Wildlife Development Officer (North) of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust stated – “The sessions have been well received by those taking part with one mum commenting that her daughter “has thoroughly enjoyed all the wild play sessions and become much more confident being in the outdoors”. Kevin continued, “We would like to provide more of these sessions into 2018 after the positive feedback from participants during this trial so we would encourage all parents and guardians to check our events online for the dates and activities we have planned.”
