Over the next year, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s major fundraising appeal aims to raise £25,000 to purchase and maintain a herd of rare breed cattle, for grazing important meadow habitat within the Trent Vale and more widely across the county.
Our initial aim is to purchase 10 Lincoln Red heifers and 1 Lincoln Red bull to enable us to establish a breeding herd, this will then be supplemented with English Longhorns and Dexters.
Lincoln Red cattle are a traditional breed from the Trent Vale, so are a heritage feature which will deliver habitat management. They are perfect for use on the species rich meadows in this area, creating habitat opportunities for plants and insects as well as nesting and feeding sites for birds, all of which have been struggling in this area over recent years. These cattle will also enable us to demonstrate the landscape and biodiversity benefits of traditional methods of livestock management, both to the farmers of today and to the public.
This is obviously a large financial commitment for the Trust, for which we will be organising many and varied fundraising events over the next year.
