About the event

Most books and training courses focus on plant identification using flowers with vegetative structures, such as leaves, taking a back seat. The unique Vegetative Key to the British Flora by John Poland has changed all of this, allowing botanists to accurately identify vascular plants throughout the year. We will focus on practical skills with the opportunity to use this key both individually and in groups. A wide range of plant material will be available together with a comprehensive booklet explaining the range of terms used in the book and which will act as a companion to the vegetative key. This course will also allow you to recognise the limitations of vegetative identification to objectively assess the reliability of identifications.

We will assume that you have some knowledge of botany and botanical terms and that you would like to gain experience of using The Vegetative Key. The course is ideal both for the amateur and the professional. As a 2 day course, we will be able to cover a range of groups including sedges, rushes and grasses.

Lunch and refreshments are provided on both days.
