About the reserve

Stonepit Plantation is an abandoned quarry, owned by the Trust since 1983.  It covers an area of 2.4 hectares, combining both woodland and parkland areas.  The parkland area contains many mature trees, such as ash, oak and sycamore, some of which are over 200 years old and formed part of the original Strelley Hall estate.  Stonepit Plantation is an important site in geological terms as it is the most southerly exposure of magnesian limestone in Britain.  The limestone is used locally in building material known as ‘Bulwell Stone’.

Stonepit Plantation is managed to increase the diversity of species in the area, and to ensure the continuation of the character for the parkland.
