We are seeking consultant level ecologists, with a significant level of applied experience, who are seeking an ecology role with a difference.

The Wildlife Trusts Consultancies (WTCs) have been engaged by Network Rail to deliver an extensive Biodiversity Plan throughout the Network Rail Eastern Region. The role will help shape and implement landscape-scale biodiversity improvements throughout rail networks. The role offers the opportunity to work in a friendly, collaborative team in a major organisation and engage with key internal and external stakeholders. The role will also offer the opportunity to work with major technologies, including data gathering tools and GIS, to organise ecological information.

Each role will be hosted by a different consultancy and has options for Network Rail office:

  • North & East  (N) – EcoNorth: York, Newcastle, Darlington, Hull
  • Greater London – Future Nature: London (preferred), Peterborough, Cambridge, Ipswich

Operational Ecologists will work under the guidance of a Strategic Ecologist, assisting them in the production of core project deliverables. The first year will focus on:

  • Biodiversity Inventory for the lineside estate, based on stakeholder and existing data
  • Biodiversity Action Plans with overarching objectives for Routes
  • Habitat Management Plans showing how the objectives will be put into practice
  • Pilot development of implementation for future stages
  • Supporting stakeholder engagement
  • Supporting integration of plans into day-to-day working practices and standards

The role will move to working with internal and external teams to implement the plans into biodiversity interventions.

Please note a full driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential as the role requires travelling to meetings and sites in the Network Rail Eastern Region.
