Growing a Wilder Nottinghamshire: Community Voices from Green Southwell’s Local COP

Green Southwell was founded in 2017 to develop community resilience in the face of the emerging climate emergency.

In their own words: “we knew that the town and surrounding area has the expertise and skills to make a positive difference, at home, at work and in our communities”.

I was delighted to be invited along to their third Local Conference of the Parties (COP) towards the end of 2025 to speak about the Wilder Nottinghamshire Network, joining several other local groups and individuals for an evening of environmental discussion, connection and inspiration.

Listening to other speakers before my three-minute slot, it’s clear that Green Southwell embodies our aspirations for the Wilder Nottinghamshire Network. We heard about their Action for the Environment – a network of local groups and activists connected via WhatsApp groups, including several taking positive action for nature across the district. One of these is wildNG Newark & Sherwood, taking inspiration from residents in Carrington, Sherwood, Basford and Mapperley who are passionate about the importance and brilliance of local nature. It was truly heartening to hear about their nature-positive projects including reducing pesticide use and their ambition to create a network of wildlife-friendly streets and green spaces in Newark.

We also heard from another campaign in the heart of Southwell, Save Badger’s Field, which is fighting to safeguard space for nature in an area of potential development. As well as galvanising support for wildlife through engagement with the planning process, the group shares information on wildlife-friendly legislation and existing protections relating to the area.

Another local initiative which resonates with our work to inspire and support young people to take action for nature and the environment is the Newark Youth CoP, organised in partnership with Newark Town Council. This brings together local schoolchildren to discuss climate change, showcase eco-friendly projects and share environmental ideas – once again showing the power of connection to stimulate action, and the value of giving a voice to young people.

Hearing from others about opportunities regarding sustainable transport, reducing consumption (I learnt that there are now two repair cafes in Newark – brilliant if, like me, you’re keen to keep household items going for as long as possible) and more shows that Newark and Sherwood really is an area that takes action for the environment seriously. Through Green Southwell, you can connect with so many likeminded people and make a difference. I left the event with a heart full of hope, and walking back through Southwell was reminded of one of my favourite quotes from anthropologist Margaret Mead:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
