About the artist
I started my adventures in watercolour painting a few years ago as a pastime to replace the previous decade I had spent using my creative skills making handmade books that reflected my interests in art history, poetry and literature. I now needed a new creative outlet and turned to watercolour to express myself. I had dabbled in creating image for print on demand sites for over a decade, but wanted to be more hands on in the creative process than digital illustration.
I enjoy the challenge that watercolour throws up - it needs to be handled with some level of precision regarding the timing - watercolour seems to have a life of its own when its reacting to paper and water!
I have always enjoyed the outdoors and have been fortunate to live near the nature reserve since I was in my early thirties, bringing up my family here has led to many hours of enjoyment walking here, and latterly I have had the good fortune to spend hours up in the Scottish Highlands where my partner enjoys practicing his photography, giving me lots of photographic references for painting - a real win!
Engaging in watercolour painting has led me to be more mindful of what I am looking at, I spend an inordinate amount of time looking at skies and loving the interplay of shadow, light , wind .. everything is somewhat heightened and offers more enjoyment. It is a welcome opportunity to try and fail, try and fail again!
