About the Artist

My name is Kate, I’m an artist from Nottingham and I specialise in drawing my favourite birds! Art forms a huge part of my life and I have been drawing and painting ever since I can remember. My love of the natural world and wild creatures and habitats comes a close second to this, so combining the two was the obvious route for my creative endeavours.

I have had a passion for the natural world since childhood, gaining a PhD in genetics and following a scientific career alongside my love of art. This fuels my enthusiasm for representing the less appreciated but commonly spotted native avian population. With several years birdwatching under my belt I have developed a love for birds of all types, particularly those which could benefit from better representation, to encourage people to appreciate, conserve and help these feathered friends.

My most commonly used medium is ink on card, with brush tip felt pens to produce a naturalistic effect in my artwork. These illustrations are inspired by bird books that I read over and over as a child and have a more scientific element as opposed to more abstract styles. I also use acrylic paints to capture sunsets and landscape, trying to capture the dramatic colours of the natural world.

My work has been featured on two beer bottles produced by From the Notebook brewery, the Blackbird mild ale and Sand Martin pale ale, the latter developed in collaboration with Attenborough nature reserve to promote their sand martin hide.

More of my artwork can be found on my Instagram @cosmic_k8.

I have an online store on Etsy, search CosmicGuineaPigs to find it. There you can purchase my art prints plus a range of other fun merchandise including enamel pin badges, decorative tapes, and the occasional clay models.
