Customers go wild for new bird food delivery service

The trading arm of local charity Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has introduced a temporary local delivery service to enable customers to care for their feathered friends whilst staying safely at home.

The team, usually based at the much loved Attenborough Nature Centre, has been unable to operate the café and shop at the centre due to the lockdown restrictions; resulting in a significant drop in income for the Wildlife Trust and visitors being unable to stock up on products such as wild bird seed and feeders.

Spring is usually an extremely busy time in the centre’s shop with customers replenishing supplies as the birds in their gardens enter the busy and all-important breeding season. Now, in an effort to help ensure that customers can provide food for garden birds and continue to connect with nature from the safety of their own homes, the trading team has introduced a temporary home delivery service for a range of bird food and feeders.

Speaking about the initiative Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust Trading’s Dr Ed Tripp said:

Adapting to the lockdown has been very difficult and many members of the team have been furloughed, but we’re determined to ensure people can continue to connect with nature and feed the birds at this crucial time.”

Last week the charity began taking orders for local deliveries, initially in the NG9 area close to Attenborough Nature Centre, and has been heartened by the response - with over a ¼ tonne of seed delivered in just a few days, plus hundreds of fat balls and thousands of mealworms – all ideally timed to help adult birds busy rearing chicks.

Ed continued:

A big part of our role at Attenborough is helping people connect with nature whilst generating vital income for the Wildlife Trust’s conservation, education and community engagement work. Introducing the bird food delivery service on top of our regular online shop offer has made a real difference and has been warmly welcomed by customers.

The charity is looking to expand the areas covered by the delivery service, which observes full social distancing guidelines, in the weeks ahead whilst also planning for when the team can once again welcome visitors back to the nature centre.

Ed explained:

We are really missing our customers and look forward to when we can reopen the centre, but in the meantime it’s great to be able to continue helping people connect with nature at this challenging time whilst generating much needed income for Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.
